![]() From our Founder, Nancy Daniel....
"Moms, Inc. was once just a thought and a desire of another mom working a full-time job and wanting to start a home-based business so she could be home with her kids. Sound familiar? Haven't many of us been there?
A few years ago, this was me. Occasionally I searched the Web for ideas of how I could make a home business work. I read about how women with home-based businesses would get leads and support one another through some sort of networking group. This sounded great; but there didn't seem to be anything similar locally.
Finally, in late 2001, I read about bizymoms.com sponsoring bizymoms chapters. These chapters were meant to be casual, friendly, supportive groups and for moms whose first priority was taking care of their families. I signed up to be the president of a chapter in Howard County, Maryland.
My name was posted on the bizymoms site for a few months, but I wasn't getting too much response. I decided to post notices in the local papers announcing the meeting place at the coffee shop of the local library. Only one or two people showed up the first few months, then grew to five and six... and some were returning for a second meeting! There, I met two of the most friendliest, most enthusiastic people - Nellie Pharr-Maletta and Heather Costigan. The three of us began talking about how great it would be to have our own Expo. Not only did these women have enthusiasm, they also had great ideas! We decided that the Expo should be held in the fall, and even though it was already September, we decided to go for it! Along came Maureen Cogan and Anita Marchesani and now we had the team to make this vision evolve! The Washington Post and Baltimore Sun both wrote an article on us. It was the best thing we could have done because it brought us together as a group and generated a lot of publicity for the group.
Immediately after our first Expo on 2002, bizymoms.com decided to withdraw support from its chapter program. We really wanted to stay together as a group but we needed a new name. Anita Marchesani suggested "Moms, Inc." and right away, we knew we had the perfect name. We had moved our meeting place to a local restaurant and we were growing by leaps and bounds.
Our second Expo in November of 2003 was a much more ambitious affair with twice the vendors and speakers throughout the day - we even had a couple of authors come to promote and sign their books. We offered the vendors an incentive to join Moms Inc. and our membership quadrupled that fall.
In March of 2004, we had outgrown our meeting space again and moved to the fellowship hall of a local church. We continue to grow in membership and in quality of what we have to offer each other. Several members expressed a desire to form their own chapter, and in July 2004, the first meeting of the Moms, Inc. Baltimore County chapter was held.
I am just amazed at how Moms, Inc. has grown in just 2 years and I am very excited to think about its potential growth in the next few years. I am so grateful for the many talented, smart, creative women I have met through Moms, Inc. and thankful for their support and friendship."
